Flood situation in Assam worsens; 10 lakh people affected in 19 districts

The flood situation in the north-eastern region of the country worsened, with five persons losing their lives in Assam today. Several new areas have been inundated, with breach of embankment of the Brahmaputra in Upper Majali. In Golaghat also new areas were submerged. Most of the rivers in the state are maintaining a rising trend. Our Correspondent reports that over 10 lakh people are affected in current spell of flood at 19 districts. Relief camps have been set up at 13 districts including Majuli, Dhemaji and Chirang and relief measures are being distributed. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal has visited Dibrugarh and Tinsukia districts today.
In neigbhouring Tripura, there is a slight improvement in weather today as rain has subsided compared to heavy and incessant showers yesterday. However, MeT department has issued warning of heavy rains. Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju said, Centre is closely monitoring the rescue and relief operations in flood affected Tripura where NDRF personnel have been rushed to assist the state administration.
